PlanLimits Weekly #1
Welcome to the first PlanLimits Weekly. Each week we track what changed in AI plan prices and usage limits, check it against the vendor's own pages, and tell you what it means for your bill. This week: a quieter cut to ChatGPT Pro 200, a much smaller free Gemini, a very cheap new Claude model on the API, and a brand-new bundled X subscription. |
What changed this week |
1. ChatGPT Pro 200 allowance drops on Oct 30 (price stays $200)
OpenAI now sells Pro at $100, $200 and $500/mo. New Pro 200 subscribers since Sep 29 get a lower allowance, and grandfathered subscribers keep the old one only through Oct 29. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast. Reports of OpenAI's email to subscribers say Codex/Work usage goes from 20x to 10x Plus and GPT-6 Pro chat from 200 to 100 messages/week. OpenAI's help page doesn't list those numbers, so treat them as reported.

2. X merges Grok, X Premium and Cursor into one subscription
x.ai/pricing and cursor.com/pricing now list the same plans: Free, Plus $8, Premium $30 (4x Plus usage), Super $100 (15x), Ultra $200 (50x), and Teams from $30/user. One usage pool covers Cursor and Grok and refreshes weekly. SuperGrok, X Premium+ and Cursor Pro/Pro+ are no longer listed.

3. Free Gemini moves to Flash-Lite; AI Plus loses Pro
From Oct 9, Gemini users with no plan get Flash-Lite only (shown as "Auto", which Google says can still route harder prompts to Flash or Pro). AI Plus ($4.99) keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro, on a date Google emails to each subscriber. AI Pro ($19.99) and Ultra keep all three models, and AI Pro gets Deep Think.

4. Claude Haiku 5.5: $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens
Released Oct 7 and available on every Claude plan, including Free. On the API it costs $0.10 input / $0.50 output per million tokens for prompts up to 100K tokens, and $0.50 / $2.50 above that. Haiku 4.5 cost $1 / $5.

5. Sonnet 5.5 cache reads cut 50%
Also on Oct 7: Claude Sonnet 5.5 cache reads went from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens. Anthropic estimates this lowers the cost of most agentic tasks by about 20%.

6. GPT-5.5 leaves ChatGPT and Codex today
As of Oct 14, GPT-5.5 is retired from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on every plan. Usage now goes to the GPT-6 family. It stays available on the API.

7. Codex daily resets, and a poll on 5-hour limits
OpenAI's Codex lead is running a 28-day push: each day the team ships an improvement or resets usage limits for paid users. A poll of Pro users on bringing back 5-hour caps in exchange for 2x weekly usage came out close to a tie. This is based on X posts, not an official policy page.

Best value pick this week
Google AI Pro, $19.99/mo Now that free Gemini and AI Plus no longer get the Pro model, AI Pro is the cheapest Google plan that does. It also includes 4x the limits of free users, 1M context, 1,000 Flow credits/month and now Deep Think. For about the price of ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, that's a lot included. If you mostly code, look at X Plus at $8 instead: it includes Cursor and Grok with one weekly usage pool.

Limit of the week The rolling 5-hour window Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT's Codex all meter usage in rolling windows (often 5 hours) and also have a weekly cap. The window starts with your first message. When you hit the limit, you wait for it to reset or pay for extra credits. The weekly cap is the real ceiling, though: you can stay under every 5-hour limit and still run out by Thursday. If your work comes in bursts, plans with no short window (like ChatGPT Pro 100 in Codex, for now) may suit you better than a plan with a bigger number on paper. |
